United States President Donald Trump highlighted New Zealand's fresh coronavirus outbreak for the second time this week, while claiming the US has done a good job of containing the virus.
"New Zealand had a big outbreak, and other countries that were held up to try and make us look not as good as we should look, because we have done an incredible job," Trump said at a news briefing on Wednesday.
"They’re having a lot of outbreaks, but they’ll be able to put them out, and we put them out."
New Zealand is currently grappling with a reemergence of cases, which came shortly after the country went more than 100 days with no local transmissions.
On Monday, Trump called New Zealand's surge in Covid-19 cases "terrible."
"Even New Zealand, did you see what's going on in New Zealand? 'They beat it, they beat it.' It was like front page, they beat it, because they wanted to show me something," he said.
In response, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said she didn't see any real comparison between her country's current cluster and the tens of thousands of cases that are reported daily in the US.
"Obviously, every country is experiencing its own fight with Covid-19; it is a tricky virus, but not one where I would compare New Zealand's current status to the United States," she said.
"New Zealand's nine cases in a day does not compare to the United States' tens of thousands, and in fact does not compare to most countries in the world. I'm not concerned about people misinterpreting our status."
New cases: New Zealand recorded five new coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, Director-General of Health Dr. Ashley Bloomfield said on Thursday.
That raises the country's total to 1,304 confirmed infections -- 101 of which remain active. New Zealand has also reported 22 coronavirus-related deaths.
The US has recorded at least 5,527,306 Covid-19 cases, including 173,114 related deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Mexico recorded 5,792 new cases of Covid-19 and 707 new deaths on Wednesday, according to the Health Ministry.
The total number of confirmed infections in the country now stands at 537,031, with 58,481 deaths.
Mexico has reported the third-highest number of deaths in the world from coronavirus, following the United States and Brazil, according to Johns Hopkins University.
Only Brazil and Peru have recorded more Covid-19 cases than Mexico in Latin America, according to JHU.

Egypt will require all travelers arriving in the country to present a negative Covid-19 Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) lab test result starting September 1.
Egyptian Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly made the announcement in a news conference on Wednesday, according to the state-run Al-Ahram news agency.
Madbouly said the decision to require the test for all travelers came due to “increasing infections in some countries,” according to Al-Ahram.
“We are keen on ensuring the health of those arriving in the country and Egyptian citizens, therefore we agreed that any traveler arriving in the country should be tested,” he said.
Egypt shut its airspace in March but resumed regular international flights gradually from July 1, Al-Ahram reported.
Foreign tourists are currently allowed entry only into the three coastal Egyptian governorates with the lowest coronavirus infection rates in the country -- South Sinai, Red Sea, and Matrouh, according to the news agency.

New York City has 19,005 confirmed and 4,638 probable coronavirus deaths as of Aug. 19, according to the most recent data on the city website.
The New York City Health Department defines probable deaths as people who did not have a positive Covid-19 laboratory test, but their death certificate lists as the cause of death “Covid-19” or an equivalent.
The total number of confirmed coronavirus deaths and probable coronavirus deaths in New York City is 23,643.
There have been 227,419 coronavirus cases in the city and 56,831 people have been hospitalized, according to the city.
The data is from the New York City Health Department and was updated on Aug. 19 at 1 p.m., according to the website.
To note: The numbers may not line up exactly in real time with CNN’s database drawn from Johns Hopkins University and the Covid Tracking Project.

Norway will impose a 10-day quarantine on travelers arriving from the United Kingdom, Greece, Ireland and Austria, due to the rising number of coronavirus cases in those countries, the Norwegian Foreign Ministry told CNN on Wednesday.
The new restrictions will go into effect at midnight local time on Friday.
"The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is now advising against non-essential travel to Austria, Greece, Ireland and the UK," the ministry said in a statement. "This also applies to Greater Copenhagen in Denmark."
The ministry statement added that this week, these countries "have all exceeded the threshold for level of infection, which has been set at 20 confirmed new Covid-19 cases per 100,000 people during the past two weeks.

Spain reported 3,715 new coronavirus infections within the last day, the health ministry said on Wednesday. The latest reports mark the highest increase in Spain’s Covid-19 daily coronavirus cases since the end of the country’s lockdown in late June.
Until Wednesday, Spain’s record number of new cases since the lockdown ended was on Aug. 14, with a total of 2,987 new cases — making the latest figures a significant increase of 728 cases in comparison to the previous record.
Spain's cumulative case number, which includes antibody tests on people who may have already recovered from the virus, rose by 6,671 to 370,867.

Experts warned that closing schools during the novel coronavirus pandemic meant more child abuse would go undetected. A new survey shows that children’s advocacy centers that work with victims who were referred by law enforcement and other government agencies served 40,000 fewer children in the first half of the year than during the same period last year, appearing to confirm those fears.
“What we were dreading did in fact happen,” said Teresa Huizar, executive director of the National Children’s Alliance.
Here are some significant developments:
· The union representing New York City’s public-school teachers said its members would not return to classrooms next month if the city fails to meet their health and safety demands, including offering testing for all students and staff.
· New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo (D) acknowledged in a Wednesday interview with WAMC that he should have instituted a mask mandate earlier and that doing so would have made a “dramatic difference” in the hard-hit state.
· President Trump’s top adviser overseeing coronavirus vaccine efforts told Business Insider that he expects a vaccine to be widely available by next spring.
· Native Americans are disproportionately represented among U.S. coronavirus infections and fatalities, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in a new report.
· The tally of new coronavirus cases reported in both Italy and Spain on Wednesday was the highest since the former hot spots ended their lockdowns, the Associated Press reported.
South Korea’s coronavirus infections are back “in full swing” and spreading nationwide after members of a church attended a political demonstration, authorities said on Thursday, threatening one of the world’s COVID-19 success stories.
The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) reported 288 new cases as of midnight on Wednesday, marking a week of triple-digit daily increases, although down slightly from the previous day’s 297.
“This is a grave situation that could possibly lead to a nationwide pandemic,” Vice Health Minister Kim Gang-lip told a briefing.
Without aggressive contact tracing, the country could experience the types of spikes and continued infections witnessed in the United States and Europe, said KCDC deputy director Kwon Jun-wook.
“Consider the COVID-19 pandemic now to be in full-swing.”
South Korea was one of the first countries outside China to see an explosive spread of the new coronavirus, but intensive tracing and testing had brought infections under control and quelled a subsequent series of spikes.
The latest outbreak is driven by hundreds of infections among members of a church run by a far-right preacher. They had attended an anti-government protest in Seoul on Aug. 15, the 75th anniversary of the Japan’s World War Two surrender and the end of colonial rule.
Kwon urged all demonstrators to get tested immediately at nearby public health clinics to protect the vulnerable around them.
The demonstration may have been a “catalyst” for the nationwide outbreak, as churchgoers chartered buses to the capital from their homes across the country, including the southern port of Busan, Kwon said.
South Korea has reported 16,346 cases of the new coronavirus with 307 COVID-19 deaths.
If infections continue rising at the current rate or accelerate, authorities say they will likely impose the strictest level of social distancing - closing schools, requiring employees to work from home and limiting gatherings to 10 people.
“Please do not make physical contact. Exchange nods instead of handshakes,” Kwon said. “Refrain from physical contact such as hugging.”
At least 53 of the new infections are linked to the Sarang Jeil Church, bringing the group’s total to 676. Hundreds more church members are being traced for testing.
Infections from the Seoul rally and one on Aug. 8 include people from nine cities and provinces. Health authorities said epidemiological work is underway in 150 facilities, including the workplaces of infected church members.
Sixty infections, including 33 from the church, have been linked to the anti-government rallies in Seoul, which drew thousands of people. At least 8,500 demonstrators had been tested as of Thursday, Kwon said.
The government has banned in-person church meetings in the greater Seoul area - an urban sprawl of 25 million people - and closed other high-risk locations, including nightclubs, karaoke bars, buffets and cyber cafes.
The Seoul city government restricted rallies there to fewer than 10 people from Friday through the rest of August.
