At least 64,469 people have now died after contracting Covid-19 in India since the pandemic began, more than any other country except the United States and Brazil.
Mexico had identified more novel coronavirus related-deaths than India until Sunday, when Indian authorities identified another 971 fatalities. Mexico's death toll stood at 64,158 as of Sunday.
Cases have been skyrocketing in India in recent weeks, though that may be partially due to the high numbers of people being tested.
Indian authorities confirmed 78,512 new Covid-19 cases on Sunday -- the fifth consecutive day the country has recorded more than 75,000 daily new cases, according to the Health Ministry. More than 3.6 million people have contracted the virus in India since the pandemic began.
As of Saturday, the country has tested more than 41.4 million people.

Another 603 cases of Covid-19 and 15 virus-related deaths were confirmed in Japan on Sunday, the country's Health Ministry said.
To date, 68,577 novel coronavirus patients have been confirmed in the country since the pandemic began, killing at least 1,297 people. As of Sunday, 234 Covid-19 patients were in critical condition.
Tokyo authorities recorded 148 cases on Sunday, down from 247 on Saturday.
A total of 20,717 people in the Japanese capital have been diagnosed with Covid-19.

Colombia recorded 8,024 new Covid-19 infections and 300 virus-related deaths in the past 24 hours, the country’s Ministry of Health reported Sunday.
That brings the national total to at least 607,938 cases, including 19,364 fatalities, since the pandemic began, according to the ministry’s data.
Colombia surpassed Mexico on Thursday, August 27, to become the country with the third-highest number of coronavirus cases in Latin America, trailing only Brazil and Peru, according to data compiled by CNN and Johns Hopkins University.
From journalist Karol Suarez in Mexico City

German leaders have condemned the “unacceptable” attempt by protesters to storm the Reichstag building during a mass rally against coronavirus restrictions.
Some of the protesters on Saturday carried the former imperial flag, which was used up until the end of the first world war.
“Flags from the Reich and far-right profanity in front of the German parliament are an unacceptable attack on the heart of our democracy,” the German president, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, said on Instagram. “We will never accept this.”
Police said about 38,000 people, double the number expected, had gathered in Berlin to protest against restrictions imposed to curb the spread of the coronavirus, such as the wearing of masks and social distancing.
Late on Saturday, several hundred people broke through barriers and a police cordon to climb the steps leading to the entrance. They were narrowly prevented from entering the building by police, who used pepper spray and arrested several people.
Police initially appeared overwhelmed, as only a handful of officers were there to block the crowd.
“We cannot be present everywhere and it is precisely these weaknesses in the deployment that were exploited, in this case to cross the security barriers in order to reach the steps of the Reichstag,” said a local police spokesman, Thilo Cablitz.
The Reichstag building, where German MPs meet, has a powerful symbolic role in the country. The domed building was burned down by the Nazis in 1933 in an act aimed at destroying what remained of German democracy between the two world wars.
Images of the incident shocked Germany.
The Reichstag is the “symbolic centre of our democracy”, the interior minister, Horst Seehofer, told Bild. “It is unacceptable to see extremists and troublemakers use it for their own ends.”
About 300 people were arrested in scuffles with police, in front of the Reichstag building and also outside the nearby Russian embassy, where protesters pelted police with bottles.
Berlin city authorities had initially decided not to allow the Saturday demonstration to go ahead, fearing the protesters would not socially distance or comply with face mask requirements.
The ban sparked outrage from organisers and their supporters who flooded social media with angry messages vowing to protest anyway, with some even calling for violence.
But on the eve of the protest, Berlin’s administrative court sided with the demonstrators, saying there was no indication organisers would “deliberately ignore” social distancing rules and endanger public health.

In Asia, South Korea reported 299 new cases as officials placed limits on dining at restaurants and closed fitness centres and after-school academies in the greater capital area to slow the spread of the virus. The 17th consecutive day of triple-digit increases brought the national caseload to 19,699, including 323 deaths.
India has registered a record new 78,761 coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, the worst single-day spike in the world, as the government continues to further ease pandemic restrictions nationwide. India now has the fastest-growing daily coronavirus caseload of any country in the world and has reported more than 75,000 infections for the fourth consecutive day.

In Europe, the number of COVID-19 patients in intensive care beds in Italy has been rising in the past few weeks. On Sunday, 86 persons infected with the coronavirus occupied ICU beds, compared with 38 in late July, as returning vacationers drive up Italy's numbers of day-to-day new caseloads as well as hospitalizations.
In Greece, the confirmed number of cases has exceeded 10,000, and more than half of them were reported this month, Greek health authorities announced Sunday.

In the Americas, the number of confirmed cases in the U.S. state of Oklahoma has surpassed 58,000, and the number of coronavirus-related deaths is nearly 800, the Oklahoma State Department of Health said Sunday.
Meanwhile, a Reuters tally showed cases surpassed seven million in Latin America, the region with the most infections in the world.
In Africa, Namibia will lift lockdown restrictions, allowing international travel, schools to reopen and on-site alcohol consumption from September, President Hage Geingob announced Friday, but he extended an overnight curfew as COVID-19 cases continue to rise.
Gambia extended by 21 days a state of emergency in mainland Africa's smallest nation as infections surged.
