Spanish actor and Oscar nominee Antonio Banderas revealed he has tested positive for coronavirus, in an Instagram post on Monday.

Posting on his 60th birthday, Banderas said he is marking the occasion while in quarantine and is feeling "relatively well, just a bit more tired than normal."

Banderas added he will use this time of recovery to "read, write, rest" and continue making plans to mark his milestone birthday.

New Zealand has marked an enviable milestone -- more than 100 days since its last coronavirus case was acquired locally from an unknown source.

As of Monday, the country had reported 1,219 confirmed cases, including just 21 active infections, all in managed isolation facilities. No cases had emerged via community transmission in 100 days, authorities announced Sunday, with all new infections coming from abroad.

In total, the island nation of 5 million people has reported 22 coronavirus deaths.

While other countries -- including Pacific neighbor Australia and the United States -- continue to battle outbreaks, New Zealand has been held up as an example of how to fight Covid-19. One key reason is that although the country appears to have the coronavirus under control, authorities are still testing thousands of people a day.

"We have seen overseas how quickly the virus can reemerge and spread in places where it was previously under control," Director-General of Health Dr. Ashley Bloomfield said Sunday.
"We need to be prepared to quickly stamp out any future cases in New Zealand. Don't let the team down -- none of us can afford to do that."

The Health Minister of southwest India's Karnataka state, B Sriramulu, tested positive for Covid-19 on Sunday after showing flu-like symptoms, he said in a tweet.

He added that he is now receiving treatment at a government hospital in Bangalore.

In the last few months, Sriramulu has visited 30 different districts in performing his duties. He has asked anyone who has been in contact with him to take precautionary measures.

Other politicians testing positive: Sriramulu is only the latest politician to test positive for coronavirus in India. Last week, the Indian Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah and the chief minister of Karnataka also tested positive for coronavirus.

Kamal Rani Varun, the minister of technical education in Uttar Pradesh state, died earlier this month in the hospital where she was receiving treatment.

What's happening in India? Last week, India became only the third country in the world to report more than 2 million total coronavirus cases, only three weeks after announcing it had hit 1 million confirmed infections.

As of Monday, India has reported 2,215,074 cases of coronavirus, including 44,386 deaths and 1,535,743 recoveries. In India, not all patients require a test to be considered recovered.

Major League Baseball has postponed scheduled games between the St. Louis Cardinals and the Pittsburgh Pirates after additional members of the Cardinals' team and staff tested positive for Covid-19.

The Cardinals organization told CNN Sunday that John Mozeliak, the team's president of baseball operations, confirmed one additional Cardinals player has tested positive.

A total of 17 members of the organization -- 10 players and seven staff -- have tested positive for the virus, resulting in the postponement of the three-game series between the teams scheduled for Monday through Wednesday at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

The Cardinals have now had 13 games postponed. The team has not played a game since July 29.

"In light of the most recent positive test results, MLB and the Club believe it is prudent to conduct additional testing while players and staff are quarantined before the team returns to play," the MLB said of the postponement in a statement Sunday.

At least three teams in the league have had games postponed since the start of the shortened season after members tested positive for the virus.

The Miami Marlins had an outbreak that put their season on hold after 21 members of the organization tested positive. The Phildelphia Phillies have had two staff members test positive for the virus.

The Australian state of Victoria recorded 19 new coronavirus deaths on Sunday -- the highest single-day increase in fatalities since the outbreak of the pandemic, Victoria’s Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) said Monday morning.

Victoria also reported 322 new cases of coronavirus from Sunday, the lowest daily increase in cases since July 29, according to the DHHS.

“I want to start by expressing my sincere condolences to all the families of the 19 Australians in Victoria who have passed away because of the COVID infection,” said Prime Minister Scott Morrison on Monday.

He added that the news is "devastating.”

The numbers: Victoria now has 14,981 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, while the death toll has increased to 229.

Australia has reported more than 21,000 coronavirus cases, including 313 deaths.

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro attacks lockdowns and the media

From journalist Rodrigo Pedroso in Sao Paulo

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has used an online post to criticize coronavirus lockdown measures and news coverage of the pandemic, in his first comments almost a full day after Brazil surpassed 100,000 coronavirus deaths.

In a series of tweets Sunday, Bolsonaro pointed to a story published by the UK’s Daily Mail that criticizes lockdown measures to address the spread of coronavirus.

It concludes that lockdown killed two people for every three with Covid in the UK. In Brazil, even without official data, the numbers would not be very different," Bolsonaro tweeted.

The Daily Mail article suggests “it is thought that as many as 16,000 people died because they didn't get medical care between March 23 and May 1.” The story claims -- without evidence -- that those people didn't go to hospital during lockdown because they feared catching the virus.

Bolsonaro went on to criticize Brazil’s biggest TV station without specifically naming it, saying the TV station “only spreads panic in the population and the discord among the powers” and “disdained, debauched and discouraged the use of hydroxychloroquine."

Brazil surpassed 100,000 coronavirus deaths on Saturday the country has reported more than 3 million cases, according to the Brazilian Health Ministry.

Bolsonaro's only mention of the 100,000 coronavirus deaths reached in his country on Saturday was to criticize the TV station's coverage of the topic.

“In a cowardly and disrespectful manner to the 100,000 dead Brazilians, this TV celebrated that date yesterday, as a true World Cup final, blaming the President of the Republic for all the deaths," he wrote.
He added that “misinformation kills even more than the virus itself. Time and science will show us that Covid's political use of this TV has brought us deaths that could have been avoided.”

UK’s new daily infections surpass 1,000 for first time since June

Britain’s confirmed coronavirus cases rose by 1,062 on Sunday, going over 1,000 for the first time since late June. As cases rise in the country, new local lockdowns are implemented in some areas and worries over a second wave of infections are rife.

Official data showed Sunday’s reported cases are 304 higher than the 758 new cases reported on Saturday.

In mid-June, the World Health Organization advised that England’s coronavirus lockdown should not be further lifted until the government’s contact-tracing system has proven to be “robust and effective”, after widespread criticism of the first results of the government’s new tracking operation.Non-essential shops began reopening in England and Northern Ireland in mid-June, and in Wales and Scotland later that month.

Hotels, pubs and restaurants in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland followed suit in July, though customers were only allowed back inside Welsh pubs and cafes in the first week of August.

French passengers sue Costa Cruises over virus ship ordeal and for manslaughter

Around 850 French passengers who were onboard a coronavirus-riddled cruise ship that was turned away from numerous ports in March have filed a collective suit in Paris with 180 complaints, including manslaughter, against Costa Cruises, their lawyer said on Sunday.

The class action, which includes complaints from the families of three passengers who died of Covid-19, accuses the Italy-based cruise giant of negligence and various faults during their trip on the Costa Magica.

From 6 to 13 March the ship was refused to dock in most of the Caribbean islands it visited, including Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, Barbados and Saint Lucia.

In the absence of stopovers, the crew encouraged the passengers to use the ship’s shops, spas, restaurants and casino without sufficiently putting health measures in place, or informing them there were suspected infections onboard, the complainants said in their suit.

The staff members on the ship “were at fault, the passengers had almost no information and only found out from local media that there were cases on the ship,” lawyer Philippe Courtois, who represents the collective of some 850 French passengers, told AFP.Courtois also criticised the “extremely light” virus measures on the ship.

“It was meant to be a dream cruise, but it ended in an ordeal,” he said.Costa Cruises, which is part of the Carnival group, has suspended its trips worldwide until 15 August due to the pandemic.

Greece sees highest daily case rise

Greek authorities have announced a record daily number of 203 new coronavirus cases, with one death.
The total number of cases is now 5,623, with 212 deaths.

Greece introduced an early lockdown in mid-March which buffered the country from the devastating effects of the pandemic seen in many other European countries.

Beginning Monday and ending August 31, everyone must wear a mask in all retail places, as well as all modes of transport, other than private cars, the government has decided. People attending church must also do so, though priests are not required to wear masks in church.

Global coronavirus cases are nearing 20 million, with 19,734,428 currently recorded on the Johns Hopkins University tracker.

The US accounts for a quarter of these cases, after passing the 5 million mark on Sunday.

The world passed 10 million cases just six weeks ago.

Meanwhile, Greece, which has in recent weeks opened up to tourists , recorded 203 new infections in the 24 hours to Sunday, the highest daily rise since the start of the outbreak in the country.

Greece introduced an early lockdown in mid-March which buffered the country from the devastating effects of the pandemic seen in many other European countries.

But the recent increase in infections prompted authorities to introduce measures like mandatory face masks in closed spaces.

· The US has passed 5 million confirmed cases of coronavirus, the highest in the world, as Donald Trump’s executive orders seeking to break a political impasse over further economic relief were denounced by a Republican as “unconstitutional slop” and Joe Biden accused the president of issuing little more than “excuses and lies”.

· Britain’s economy will be officially declared in recession this week for the first time since the 2008 financial crisis, as the coronavirus outbreak plunges the country into the deepest slump on record. The country recorded more than 1,000 new infections on Sunday, for the first time since late June.

· Greece recorded 203 new infections in the 24 hours to Sunday, the highest daily rise since the start of the outbreak in the country.

· Ten coronavirus patients have died in India in a fire that broke out early on Sunday at a hotel being used as a Covid-19 facility, officials said. This is the second such incident this month.

· UK Ministers have rejected a call from the children’s commissioner for England to bring in routine coronavirus testing in English schools. Nick Gibb, the schools minister, confirmed that teachers and pupils in England will not have access to routine testing when they reopen in September, and will instead be primarily reliant on hygiene and distancing measures to control any spread of the virus. Scotland, where schools start to reopen from Tuesday, plans to bring in an enhanced Covid-19 testing and surveillance regime, though it will not be ready in time for the start of term.
